Editing Pages

When you open a page you will see (top or bottom left) an Edit Page button. Click this and the editing screen opens. Most of the time you will just want to retype over what is there, or add paragraphs. When you have finished click on Save and review your work.

Point-and-click mode

This is the most straightforward editing mode for most purposes, unless you are already familiar with wiki text editors. The wordprocessor style interface is more-or-less WYSYWG and you can use the toolbars to format text (bold, italics, etc), headings (1,2 &3) and so on. Pictures can be inserted and resized fairly easily too.

If the edit window isn't already in Point-and-click mode then click on the top righthand corner of the edit screen (next to the PB sandwich!).

You can find full details of the new editor at: http://pbwiki.com/point-and-click

Editing in classic mode

This mode is best if you want to use HTML commands to add more formating to the page. But that won't be most people!

You can use use the formatting buttons (top left) to do some basic layout, but not as much as in P-a-C mode.

In this mode it is easier to put in the formatting directly as you type using the following codes:

Lists

One * (asterisk) + a space at the beginning of a line makes a bullet point, like this.

  1. Use # + a space at the beginning of a line to make a numbered list, like this.
    1. Nested lists like this one are made by doubling the * or # for subpoints

Character Formatting

To make something bold, put 2 * (asterisk) before and after it: word

To make something italicized, put 2 ' (apostrophe) before and after it: word

By using 2 _ (underscore) before and after, text can be underlined: word

Strikethrough is done with (space +) 1 - (dash) before and 1 - (dash) (+ space) after: word

Sections

One ! at the beginning of a line makes a huge headline (like "Editing pages" above)

Two !! make a big headline (like "Sections" above)

Three !!! and more--up to 6--make successively smaller headlines

Other

1 | (vertical bar) before and after something puts a box around it

3 - (hypen) on a line by themselves make a dividing line (horizontal rule) like the one below the boxed text below this

A box like this is made by putting a space in front of the line. If it doesn't seem to work, try adding an extra blank line before/after it.

Adding New Pages

If you use two capital letters in a word with lowercase letters (eg FunnyWord - also known as camel case) in between, PBwiki will automatically recognize the word as a link to a page . For example, ContactsPage links to pages, but sandbox and Sandbox don't. If you use a word like FunnyWord but don't yet have a page called FunnyWord, you can create that page just by clicking on the word. (Until the page is created, the link will have a dashed underline decoration. This way you can tell at a glance which pages have been created and which haven't.) On the other hand, to prevent a Funny Word from becoming a link, add ~ in front of it. Once a link has been created from a page it can be accessed from any other page by putting in its FunnyWord name.

If you loose a page (maybe because the link has been delated) you can find it again by clicking on Pages __show all__.

Making Other Links

You can also just type or paste in URLs like http://yummy.pbwiki.com/WikiStyle#SpecialPages or put brackets around a word. Brackets will force the word to become a link even if it isn't in the FunnyWord style.

Note: The full url is needed (ie including http: etc) in order for PBwiki to recognise it as a link.

Just type in email addresses like support@pbwiki.com.

A special "top" link (to return a user to the top of the page) can be made by putting top between angle brackets <>. The top link can be customized by inserting your own link description inside the angle brackets, for example, "Go to top of page".

Tables

Table rows can be made by beginning and ending a line with | (vertical bar). The content of the row is placed between the bars. If more than one cell is desired for any particular row, an additional vertical bar is used as the separator.

Adjacent table rows will be automatically combined into a single table.

Table of Contents

A table with links to all the (!, !!, and !!!) sections on that page can be made by inserting toc between < and > wherever you'd like the table. See the top of this page for an example.

To make the table only link to the largest (!) headlines, use toc!.

To make the table only link to the largest and second-largest headlines (! and !!), use toc!!.

Use Wiki Style Characters Normally

The tags raw and verbatim (both enclosed in angle brackets: <> )can be used to prevent PBwiki from interpreting special formatting characters before and after a word, eg which normally would make the word bold. For shorter sections of text (a few words), use raw; for longer sections, use verbatim. These tags act like HTML tags in that there is both an opening tag (raw) and a closing tag (/raw), the opening before the text and the closing after the text..

Special Pages

RecentChanges (the 'Changes' link at the top and bottom) shows you all of the changes made to the wiki.

AllPages lists all of the pages in the wiki. Choosing "except revisions" at the top of AllPages reveals the earlier versions of the pages as well. AllPages is also the place to go if you would like to delete pages or revisions.

The SideBar that appears in the upper right may be edited like any other page in the wiki. If you don't have a SideBar, simply create a page with this name by typing SideBar on any page of the Wiki, save, click on the link and add something to it. Once the SideBar is in place you can delete the original typing - the Side Bar remains.

PBwiki accepts HTML, so if there's something that you'd like to do that can't be done with WikiStyle--and you know HTML--go for it!

Importing from Word

Pasting in (or dragging and dropping text works fine, but you will loose all formating information (headings, bold, etc.). But is is sometimes better to work in Word first for longer entries. For one thing you get a spellchecker.

Saving you word page as HTML is a different matter. This will import (most?) style features into the wiki.

Deleting links

If you delete all links to the page, the page remains as an 'orphan'. You can find it again by clicking on Pages show all. (See FAQ).
