Symptoms of eating disorders

  • Cognitive disturbances: distorted body image, distorted internal perceptions, maladaptive attitudes and illogical thinking.
  • Preoccupation with food. Anorexia nervosa is characterised by a prolonged refusal to eat adequate amounts of food, resulting in weight loss. Bulimia Nervosa is characterised by ‘binge’ eating followed by purging, either by self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives. A non-purging type of bulimia attempts to counteract the effects of food by strict dieting and/or vigorous exercise.
  • Personality and mood problems. Depression and mood problems tend to accompany eating disorders as do obsessive compulsive patterns of behaviour.
  • Medical problems e.g., amenorrhea, low blood pressure, body swelling, significant changes in appearance of skin, hair, nails etc.
