  1. Discuss your own experience of short-term separations when you were children? How do you react when separated from a loved one now? Are there parallels between the two?
  2. Imagine you are a psychologist and have been asked to give advice to a hospital caring for sick children. They want to know what can be done to improve the child’s experiences whilst staying in hospital, particularly in respect of being separated from parents. What advice would you give?
  3. Research the links between delinquency and broken homes. Newspaper articles could provide suitable case study material as could the internet. How can psychological theory help us understand social problems like this? (See, for example, Bee (1997), page 309.)
